OVERVIEW

Georg Reuter is a partner and the practice leader for the Employment and Human Rights Group. He is also a member of the Advanced Education and Research Practice Group, and has over 25 years of experience in the areas of employment and human rights law, as well as intellectual property and licensing law, with a particular focus on the transfers of new technologies from academic institutions to business.

Georg has worked closely with many of BC’s advanced education and research institutions to assist them in commercialization of their technologies, including The University of British Columbia (UBC), the Centre for Drug Research and Development, the Vancouver Prostate Centre, and the BC Cancer Agency.

On the employment side of his practice, Georg assist both employers and employees in negotiating and drafting employment related agreements and policies, and in advising on strategies for hiring (and where necessary) terminating employees.

Georg has advised UBC on the licence and research collaboration agreements that underpin the more than 80 life science spin-off companies started at UBC.  In particular, Georg focuses on licensing and technology transfer transactions, with extensive experience in dealing with transfers between institutions (e.g., universities, hospitals, research facilities) and businesses in the life science and software industries.

In 2015 Georg was a key contributor to UBC’s licence with Roche Pharmaceuticals, executed in December 2015.  This deal was UBC’s largest ever, with up to $141.7 million US in pre-clinical, clinical and sales milestone payments and royalties thereafter.

REPRESENTATIVE CLIENT WORK

  • March 2016: Acted for Kairos Therapeutics in connection with the acquisition of Kairos by Zymeworks Inc. This acquisition brought together Kairos, as a leader in the discovery and development of antibody drug conjugates (ADCs), and Zymeworks to create one of the industry’s leading biologics drug discovery and development organizations.

HONOURS & AWARDS

In 2015, Georg was nominated for the LifeSciences BC Deal of the Year Award, in connection with his work in advising UBC.

In 2003, Georg was awarded the Canadian Government’s Deputy Minister Pride and Recognition Award for outstanding achievement in the conduct and strategic management of a complex lawsuit that was ultimately brought to a successful conclusion with a unanimous decision of the Supreme Court of Canada.
