Professional Development

What you can expect from our mid-size, downtown firm:

  • A training / orientation week
  • Access to our Mentoring Program
  • Participation in Associate Development
  • Student Rotation System
  • Quality Resources
  • Feedback
  • Support

As a summer student with the firm, you will be given exposure to both litigation and solicitor work.  However, you will be encouraged to obtain work from the areas that are of interest to you.  you will also be given opportunities to observe court proceedings and mediations.

As an articled student with the firm, you will rotate through various areas of practice, giving you exposure to both our litigation department and our solicitor based groups in a more formal structure.  There is a fluidness to our rotation and students with a particular interest are encouraged to develop their skills in that area and to attend continuing education courses during their year.

Lawyers generally assign work directly to students, and each student has constant access to their principal, members of the articling committee and department heads. The lawyers have an open-door policy which allows students to benefit and learn from the well-respected and experienced litigators and business lawyers at RBS.  The firm is also pleased to have a Director of Associate Development and students are expected to attend associate sessions on practice and skill development.

We have an experienced in-house Law Librarian who provides training and research assistance to students. Each student is assigned their own office with shared support staff.  A wide range of electronic and internet-based tools, including Westlaw Canada is available to the students as well as remote access to the firm's email, desktop applications and databases.

At RBS, charitable activities and social functions give students a chance to meet with staff and lawyers. As an integral part of the team, students will quickly become familiar with everyone at the firm.
