Profile
Prior to joining Richards Buell Sutton LLP in 2000, Scott practised law for over six years with a national law firm in Toronto. Scott is the head of the Construction Law Group and practises with the Technology Law Group at Richards Buell Sutton LLP.
Scott graduated with his B.A. in International Relations from The University of British Columbia in 1984 and obtained his law degrees from Bristol University in England in 1987 and UBC in 1989. His legal expertise has led Scott to become a prolific author, editor, lecturer, and media interviewee on a variety of legal topics. Scott is a past member of the National Executive of the International Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association and Past Chairman of the British Columbia Branch.
During his law school studies, Scott worked at one of the world's largest law firms preparing a barrister's brief for the House of Lords and as a Pupil in Barristers Chambers. Scott has maintained his involvement in international legal matters through his role as features editor of The Canadian International Lawyer Journal (sponsored by the Canadian Bar Association).
After law school Scott chose to move to Toronto to practise at a large national firm. During his time in Toronto, he became involved with the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR), making the acquaintance of its founding president Dr. Fraser Mustard. Scott continues to support CIFAR to this day. During Scott's time in Toronto, he was also involved in community activities such as taking on the role of Vice-President of the Toronto Public Art Commission.
After the birth of his son Scott returned to Vancouver where he was recruited to RBS. Scott says, "The best thing about working here is the people".
Scott believes in the importance of providing good service to clients and has maintained long standing relations with them. One of the first clients he ever spoke to when he answered his ringing phone upon his arrival at RBS was a construction and real estate development company that has worked with Scott ever since and has grown to be a significant client. "That loyalty feels good – but I service them very well. I go to their office frequently and I've taken the time to get to know them."
Scott is married and has a son. Outside of the office he coaches his son's hockey team and enjoys skiing with his family. Scott also admits to a passion for art, architecture and politics having been involved with federal and provincial election campaigns.
